Girls’ Weekend

I’ve recently returned from a long weekend away with two very special girls in my life, specifically my mom and my sister, Emily. Mom lives in Florida, Emily’s up in Maine and I’m in New Jersey. This weekend we met up in Massachusetts. Mom flew up to New Jersey, and after I picked her up at the airport we road-tripped up to Mass. We got really lucky with the weather for our weekend trip. While it might not have been warm enough for a swim (well at least not for us) it definitely was nice enough to take a stroll along the beach.

We were staying in the coastal town of Hull chosen for it’s proximity to Hingham, Massachusetts, aka Bucket Town. Hingham is known as Bucket Town is because before the industrial revolution it was filled with artisans crafting wooden buckets by hand. As for what drew us to Hingham, some of those artisans were Mom’s (and therefore also my) ancestors. Though unlike Mom my sister and I never had the same last name as those ancestors.

We toured the Hingham Heritage Museum and got a look at some of the famous Hersey Buckets. Then we stopped off at the Hersey Farm and had fun exploring the town of Hingham.

The weather was so perfect that we had to take a stroll through World’s End, a waterside park with a view of the Boston skyline. Mom also got to see lots of fall foliage, which is not something she gets to enjoy down in Florida.

Halloween the weather was still nice, but decidedly cooler. We did a little more sightseeing around Hull with a look at a view of the Boston Light lighthouse and a bit of exploring in Fort Revere Park with its abandoned and slightly spooky fort. Our trip to the Paragon Carousel was a bit less successful as apparently we missed the attraction closing for the season by one week.

When the cold finally got the best of us, we headed back to our rental house where we played games and then carved up some pumpkins to use as soup bowls for a very festive Halloween dinner. We even had a couple of trick-or-treaters come to the door.

All in all it was a great girls’ weekend with an extra hour thrown in thanks to the ending of Daylight Savings Time.
