Lots of cool things happened this past week. I went out to lunch with a good friend. I took a class at the library. The daffodils started blooming, but perhaps the most memorable event was the earthworms.
Friday is garbage day. So on Thursday afternoons we have to put out our garbage pails. We keep them in the garage. Amazingly, there’s actually room for them in there but just barely. It was a sunny day on Thursday so I didn’t mind going to the garage to retrieve the pails.
I opened the big garage door and a few seconds later noticed something on the ground. Closer inspection revealed it was a wriggling earthworm. Weird. Where did that come from? This was a couple of feet from the driveway. I think it had rained the night before, but the driveway and garage floor were perfectly dry.
Being the sort of person who is always saving smaller creatures from unpleasant fates, but also the sort of person who gets grossed out at the idea of touching a slimy worm I grabbed a small twig from the yard and used it to scoop the worm up and carry him over to a more worm-friendly spot in the yard.
Worm salvation complete, I returned to the garage only to find there was now a second worm on the garage floor in almost the exact same spot as the first one. What the heck was going on? I think at this point I actually looked around to see if there were any cameras lurking in the bushes because it was starting to feel like I was on some sort of prank show. I also looked above me. The garage door was over my head, but I couldn’t detect any sort of source of the worms.
So, mistakenly thinking the coast was clear I went and retrieved another twig and then leaned down to scoop up worm number two. Friends, the coast was not clear. As I was scooping up the second worm a third one fell from the sky and bounced off my head before landing harmlessly on the garage floor. I screamed, because remember I’m the kind of person who gets grossed out touching slimy worms, let alone having one land in my hair.
After patting my hair to make sure there weren’t any worm hitchhikers I definitely did give another look around for those hidden cameras or to see if anyone had seen what was going on, but apparently I was the only witness to the strange phenomenon of worms raining from the sky.
I scooped up those two worms and relocated them to the yard as well, and with extreme caution I wheeled the pails out of the garage in case the worm spigot got turned on again. Apparently the earthworm deluge had run its course, but Friday afternoon when it was time to return the pails to the garage, I let Ron go in ahead of me just in case!
So, watch out for falling worms out there, and for everyone who celebrates I wish you a happy Easter!
