Those three little blue eggs I shared with you a couple of weeks ago have now turned into three little birds, make that three hungry little birds:

The newly hatched baby robins look a bit like strange, alien creatures, but mom and dad robin have been busy scouring the yard for worms to keep these little guys fed. Looking at this week’s weather forecast, which includes a lot of rain, I would say that Mother Nature is helping the birds out on the worm-finding front.
Even those of us who aren’t desperate for worms are pretty happy with the forecast which is about ten degrees cooler than it was a week or so ago. It still feels like summer but we (not to mention our ailing air conditioning unit) just might make it through another season.

I don’t know if birds and wasps talk to one another, but somehow word has gotten out that our home is a good place for flying creatures to build homes of their own. We noticed this wasp’s nest being constructed outside a seldom used sliding glass door the other day. While I enjoy our robin neighbors, I’m much less thrilled to see these new residents.
On a more positive note, it does seem like I’ve finally found some plants that flourish nicely in our flower pots, but which the local deer are not at all interested in:

These pretty pink and yellow lantana flowers have been blooming nicely since the start of the summer and seem quite happy with their sunny spot on the patio. So, if you’re on the hunt for a sun loving bloom that the deer (at least our local ones) don’t enjoy, might I suggest lantana.
We do have one new backyard resident. This year we’ve spotted a little bunny hopping around. (Sorry, I never seem to have my phone on me when I spot this little rabbit.) We’ve seen bunnies around here in the past, but it’s been a few years. So it’s nice to see our happy and hoppy new neighbor.
I hope you too are enjoying your summer!

I discovered deer were chomping on the top of my recently planted Morency cherry tree. Fortunately, I had a spray bottle of organic deer repellent and it seems to work just fine. Now if the rain would go away, maybe I could finish piling the brush from where I’ve been trimming the lot behind the house we just bought.
Hoping the rain lets up for you!
Great pictures! Enjoy your new neighbors and pretty flowers! Stay cool 😎!
Love mom😘
Thanks, Mom!
We think the deer ate our lantana last year but maybe it was the rabbits
I wonder if deer in different areas have different tastes. I used to live in a much more deer filled area and had no problem growing hyacinths. Then I moved here and every hyacinth gets chomped right down to the ground.
The deer are leaving our plants alone right now, and I suspect it’s because it’s midsummer and there’s plenty of green stuff for them to eat. In the winter, they’ll eat anything.
