True confession. I almost forgot to write this post. I even wrote it down on today’s to-do list, but when I consulted the list a few minutes ago and saw it there, I was confused. I don’t need to do that until tomorrow, the little voice in my head unhelpfully said. Then I realized that no, today was Substack post day, and so here I am.
I could blame this on the fact that Monday was a holiday, but since I live in a household where no one has a traditional job and so Monday holidays are really just Mondays around here, that’s a bit of a stretch. Though I know very much how easy it is to get confused about what day of the week it is when there’s a holiday to throw off the routine.

This always reminds me of back when I was in second grade, and I used to have to meet my sister at her nursery school (it was across the street from my elementary school) and walk her home. She only had nursery school 2 or 3 days per week. I’ve long since forgotten the schedule, but it was either Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday. Anyway, it might very well have been the week of Columbus day or some other week, when we had a random day off that threw off my schedule. Whatever the case I and one of my classmates (he was also my next door neighbor) walked over to my sister’s nursery school only to be confused when she wasn’t there. It took me a minute or so to realize my error. At the time I remember feeling pretty dumb. With the benefit of hindsight, I realize this is the sort of mistake that full-grown adults make all the time, and also that it was highly bizarre that my parents thought it was appropriate to have a second grader picking up a little kid from nursery school, but what can I say? The 1980s were a bit different.
I’m pretty sure my discombobulation stems from the fact that things are a bit hectic around here. We’re having some much needed house repairs and improvements done, and the day is filled with all sorts of clanging and drilling and whatnot. Throw in a few extra tasks that are related to all the work being done, and my poor feeble brain is unable to keep track of what day it is and what I need to do.
As always thanks for reading, and hope you are enjoying a much quieter week!
